A Consistency Mindset
Doing something over and over fosters results. It’s this act of repetition that gets you where you want to be. Nothing changes if nothing changes.
That’s one of my favorite phrases and reminders. While you can make a change once, it’s the commitment of completing the action often that matters most. Consistency will get you way farther than motivation.
I hope to shed some light on consistency and maintaining such a mindset in this article.
Below you’ll find definitions, what it can look like, why it’s necessary and more.
Consistency = “Doing what you know you should do even when you don’t want to until it becomes a habit. Achieving a goal becomes only a matter of time when you are consistent.”
Mindset = “The driving force in the quest for success and achievement. A mindset that combines discipline, strength, confidence and ambition is a powerful mindset – this can achieve anything it sets its sights on. A powerful mind can achieve anything.”
The narrative or mindset one has can make showing up for themselves easier. When you cheer yourself on and speak kindly to yourself, you feel better. You move better. You carry yourself better.
Having your arsenal of reminders and mindset shifts that work for you is vital in trying to remain consistent.
What “motivates” one person might not work for you. Find the ideations that keep you grounded, positive and moving forward. This will aid in the desire to remain consistent.
Consistency may also look different for everyone. We all have different goals, lifestyles and capacities. What matters is that you are repeating something enough for it to become a habit – something you automatically do.
This can be something you do daily, weekly, monthly or even yearly. More often than not, it will be a habit that you repeat daily or weekly when wishing to grow. It should be completed even on the days you simply don’t feel like it.
Those are the moments that contain the most opportunity for growth and learning. You’re showing up for yourself and proving to yourself that you matter. The things you want, the person you want to be – matters and is possible.
Reflect
When you’re trying to establish a new habit or wishing to change aspects of your life, it’s a good idea to set time aside for reflection. Are you doing what you said you would? Are you making things easier or harder for yourself?
Author James Clear proposes this question to ask yourself: “Are the results I am expecting aligned with the habits I am following each day?”
Simply put, are the things you’re doing daily moving you closer or further from the things you want, where you want to be, who you want to be?
Remember to be 1% better every day. Act as if you’re already the person that meditates daily, walks with confidence, trains 4x a week, etc. Where you are a year from now will be a direct reflection of your daily choices today.
The #1 key to any goal or upleveled lifestyle is consistency.
Takeaways
Consistency will create the life you crave. Whatever it may be, repeatedly showing up for yourself will foster results. Keeping this in mind is easier to believe in rather than relying on motivation.
Motivation is fleeting. It comes and goes. Habits, once established, become a lifestyle.
