5 Mentalities to Bring Into the New Year
A new year always cultivates excitement and that “fresh start” feeling.
Whether you’re someone who loves new year's resolutions or someone who skips them entirely, having a positive mindset can be a game changer going into a new year.
I’ve gathered five awesome mentalities that can make this kind of impact — let’s get into them.
Choose Your Hard
Making healthy decisions can be just as difficult as suffering from unhealthy habits.
Yes, it might be hard to squeeze an hour of gym time into your busy day. Yes, it might be hard to stick to eating at home when ordering is easier. Yes, it might be hard to meditate in a loud environment.
However, it’s harder to reverse and battle health issues from a lack of good choices. Living a proactive lifestyle proves to be more fruitful. Choose your hard – put in the work now for health and ease, or spend time scrambling later.
Abundance Mindset
Thinking in abundance can be transformative. This means you see all the good, what’s readily available and the positive around you. You see the world in terms of opportunity and appreciation.
What we focus on expands. If we think of all the things we don’t have, what doesn’t go right or what hasn’t happened, that’s all you’ll continue to see. This is a scarcity mindset.
Differences between a scarcity and abundance mindset:
Focuses on limitations → Sees possibilities & opportunities
Fears change → Embraces change
Pessimistic toward the future → Optimistic about the future
There’s never enough → There’s always more
Attached to an outcome → Along for the journey
There are so many other mindset shifts you can make to embrace an abundant mindset.
Don’t know how to get started? Practice gratitude; welcome change; give to others; and in all situations, search for the opportunities and solutions. This take practice, but carries a lifetime of benefits.
Let go of What You Can’t Control
There is no sense in using your energy worrying about others and external factors. You will never create the life you crave without putting effort toward aspects you control. Put your effort toward YOU.
A wonderful piece of advice is: “Let go of what you can’t control. If you can’t change it, it’s time to accept it and finally find a way to live with it instead of being frustrated or upset.
Examples of things in your control:
Your thoughts, words & actions
Self-talk
Mindset & attitude
Boundaries
How you spend your time
What you consume – food, beverages, reading material, music, podcasts, shows, movies, etc
Goals & commitments
Where your energy goes
No Wasted Time
This is a unique perspective from former Monk and Author Cory Muscara. The idea is that there is no such thing as “wasted time.” Everything happens for a reason and in the way it’s always been meant to.
It’s common to get upset for not knowing better or not knowing something in the past.
You were meant to experience your past in the way that it happened. Otherwise, you would not have the self-awareness, motivation or “fed-upness” you have now. We can’t have the “good” without experinceing the “bad.”
Move away from thinking and saying you have or are wasting your life. You’re experiencing patterns that need to occur so that you are prepared and available for what’s to come. Trusting can be difficult but rewarding.
Nothing Changes Unless Something Changes
You are where you are because of choices you have made or continue to make. You will never see a new result if you don’t do something different. It’s up to you to interrupt the pattern.
You’ll never get a new job if you don’t start applying. You’ll never lose weight if you don’t tweak your diet. You’ll never do a split if you don’t stretch or practice.
Make the adjustments needed for the things you want. Maybe you have a list. Pick one or two that seem doable and START NOW.
After you see the results, move on to the next.
Takeaways
It doesn’t have to be January 1 for you to adopt any of these mindsets. Did one resonate more than the others? Start implementing it today.
If you prefer to enjoy the rest of your year as is, that’s good too. These are here for whenever you feel a need for them. Always reach for what speaks to you.
We hope you found something you needed or didn’t even know you needed.
